Why did Voldemort choose Harry?

“The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches… born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies… and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not… and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives… the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies….”
Voldemort heard a part of this prophecy and realized that it meant Harry or Neville, but why choose Harry? Do you think he would’ve gone and killed Neville as well had his plan worked? Dumbledore mentions that Voldemort chose the half-blood over the pure blood but that seems very uncharacteristic of him do, even with him being a half blood.

Part of me always thought that he simply chose to kill Harry first and that he would afterward go to kill Neville too - Voldemort takes no chances, so I guess he would want to make sure nothing hurts him. But this is really not canon, so I am still left wondering about the question you asked...

I always assumed this too, that Neville was next on the list because Voldie always covers his bases, but just didn't factor in Lily's magic trick and therefore never made it to the Longbottoms. Did Bellatrix torture them before or after Voldie disappeared? I can never remember... but if it's after it shines some light on the possibility that he was next.

I've wondered if Neville's parents ever went into hiding. I guess the Potters only did because they heard Voldemort was after them.

I would guess they did, that Dumbledore protected them the way he protected Potters.

Well, this is Dumbledore's explanation.
